Winton Woods used a decisive second-quarter surge and steady late-game free-throw shooting to defeat its opponent 66-51 in the Regional Semi-Finals on Thursday night at Springfield High School in Springfield, Ohio.
The Warriors turned a tight early contest into a comfortable advantage in the second quarter, breaking the game open behind a scoring burst from Nate Dawson and Chris Reid. Their combined production during that stretch shifted momentum firmly in favor of Winton Woods, giving the Warriors control heading into halftime and setting the tone for the rest of the night.
Offensively, Winton Woods featured a balanced attack, led by Isaiah Mack-Russell's game-high 21 points. Dawson followed with 16 points, capitalizing on his second-quarter outburst, while Reid added 10 points to complement the perimeter and transition game. Dasai Bronson chipped in 14 points, giving the Warriors four players in double figures, and depth scoring came from Josai Hill with 3 points and JaQuawn Walker with 2 points.
Last night was all about a brotherhood pushing through adversity and accomplishing one of our goals we set for ourselves. This Team, this coaching staff, our community has embraced the culture of holding each other up and lifting each other up! I love being a Warrior and I know my kids love being Warriors as well. It's the "Culture" To God be all the Glory!!! Our Job is Not Done!!!- Head Coach Mike Pilgrim
The Warriors' ability to convert at the free-throw line proved critical in closing out the win. Winton Woods finished 20-of-28 at the stripe and was particularly sharp in the fourth quarter, going 12-of-16 to keep the opponent at bay. Each time the margin threatened to shrink, the Warriors responded by knocking down free throws and getting timely stops on the defensive end.
Defensively, Winton Woods held its opponent to 51 points, limiting sustained runs and protecting the lead built in the first half. The Warriors' pressure and discipline on that end of the floor helped preserve the cushion created by the second-quarter scoring frenzy, forcing difficult shots and controlling the tempo down the stretch.
With the 66-51 victory, Winton Woods advances to the Regional Finals, where the Warriors will face Lima Senior on Saturday afternoon at Springfield High School. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., with a berth in the state final four on the line as Winton Woods looks to carry its balanced scoring and late-game execution into the next round.
