Winton Woods High School captured the District Boys Basketball Championship on Friday night, using a decisive third-quarter surge to pull away and defeat Anderson 55-48 at 1624 Musketeer Dr. in Cincinnati.
Junior guard Isaiah Mack Russell set the tone early for the Warriors, pouring in 10 points in the first quarter as the opening eight minutes unfolded in back-and-forth fashion. Neither team was able to create much separation in the first half, with Anderson answering nearly every Winton Woods basket and keeping the district title matchup tight heading into the break.
Coming out of halftime, Winton Woods seized control. The Warriors tightened their defense in the third quarter, limiting Anderson's clean looks and turning stops into transition opportunities. That stretch allowed Winton Woods to methodically build a cushion, creating the first meaningful separation of the night and putting Anderson in catch-up mode entering the fourth quarter.
Russell finished with a game-high 26 points to lead Winton Woods, maintaining his scoring presence throughout and delivering key baskets whenever Anderson threatened. He was joined in double figures by Nate Dawson, who added 11 points and provided timely offense during the Warriors' third-quarter push. JaQuawn Walker contributed 9 points, giving Winton Woods another reliable option in the half-court attack.
Role contributions helped secure the championship as well. Dasai Bronson chipped in 6 points, while Chris Reid scored 2 and Brian Key Jr. added 1, helping the Warriors reach the 55-point mark. Winton Woods' collective effort on the defensive end proved just as important, particularly during the third quarter when the Warriors' pressure and rebounding limited Anderson's second-chance opportunities.
Anderson mounted one final push in the fourth quarter, putting together a late run to trim the margin and extend the contest. However, Winton Woods maintained composure in the closing minutes, managing possessions, getting needed stops and closing out the 55-48 victory to secure the district crown.
With the win, Winton Woods advances from district play with momentum, led by Russell's standout performance and a balanced supporting cast. The Warriors' ability to respond in a tight first half, dominate the critical third quarter and withstand a late Anderson surge underscored the poise and resilience that carried them to the championship. The Warriors march on to face Northmont High School in the Regional Semifinals on Wednesday, March 11th, at Springfield High School. Tip-off is at 7:30 PM.
